National Association on Mental Illness

Client: National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI)

Challenge: The client wanted an animated explainer video to portray the story of someone struggling with mental illness. They wanted the visuals and music to be minimalist and calming.

Solution: The client provided a style guide and basic shapes of the characters they wanted animated. I altered the characters to convey workplace diversity. And I portrayed a workplace setting by adding in elements such as a water fountain, desk, and cubicle. I wanted to show the difference before and after the person became aware of and started opening up about her mental illness. I did this by showing her farther away from the other people or with a divider between them. Once she started opening up and realized other people had issues that they could share with her too, she was shown as being with the group instead of separate. I kept the animations slower and non-jarring to help convey calm for the final product.
